How to NOT be an idiot like Edison Chen

Edison Chen brought his Mac in for repairs at an UNAUTHORIZED GREY MARKET Mac shop in Central, where the staff proceeded to search for and steal photos from his hard drive.

First of all, that shop next to the very good Ultimate PC and Mac shop in Central, is NOT an apple authorized reseller. It is a parasite that took space next to a well-known shop to try and steal business. Just by comparing the two shops it should be obvious which one is the one you should take your business to and which one is a shady place where you can have your data stolen.

Second, what idiot sends his computer in for repair without wiping private data? I will NEVER send my computer in for a hardware repair until I swap the hard drive out with a new one that has a fresh OS install on it. My data never leaves my home.

Did you know that even if you erase files from your computer, and empty the trash, it is really easy to retrieve those files, especially photos? You need to swap the hard drive with a new one that has never had private files, or you need to use a utility to zero all data (preferably overwriting random data several times) after you've deleted the files from the drive you're sending in for service.

Buy a cheap hard drive for this purpose if you need to.

For software repairs, it's always better to ask someone to do on-site repair. Watch them as they work. Of course it's better if you can copy all of your private data to a backup drive that the repair tech doesn't have access to.

If the staff at that grey market reseller stole photos from Edison's hard drive, then do you really think they won't have other things, like credit card numbers, eBay and Paypal passwords, your own personal email passwords for their amusement? Be smart, folks!

If you have private data on your disk and it gets stolen when you send your Mac in for repair, then it's your own dumb fault for letting it happen.

The third way to avoid being an idiot like Edison Chen is to stop talking like you're someone's 12 year-old ghetto bitch.
